Who Was the First Person to Climb Kilimanjaro?

German climbers Ludwig Purtscheller and Hans Meyer became the first to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in 1889. Hans Meyer had already attempted it in 1887, but he had trouble getting past the ice. Yohani Kinyala Lauwo, who was only 18 at the time, helped Ludwig and Hans. Yohani resided at Marangu, the village on the lower slopes that gave its name to the Marangu Route. He was eager to assist the two Germans despite having recently lost his construction job. Yohani guided numerous further climbers to Uhuru Peak until he died at the age of 125. He never went back to working in construction.

Baron Carl Claus von der Decken and Richard Thornton attempted unsuccessfully to climb Kilimanjaro in 1861 and 1862.
